Visual and Performing Arts Complex

The Project.

Engaging both visual and performance arts, the new complex comprised of four buildings, welcomes light and an audience. With large roll-up glass doors, dancers can be seen from outside, and light fills the artist studios. The four buildings include two new and two renovations. The Leighton Solution.

Leighton provided services from design through construction, including geotechnical investigation, observation and testing, special inspection and materials testing, and a soil suitability study for imported soil. The soil conditions included challenges with oversized particles, which required consideration for removal, or crushing.

Soils observation and testing consisted of backfill placement, as fill thickness and the earthwork for overexcavation and compaction of the building pad, utility trench backfill, concrete slab-on-grade subgrade preparation, and exterior pavement and sidewalk subgrade preparation. Materials tested were concrete, masonry, and grout, including batch plant inspection.
