Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena

The Project.

Twenty-five years ago, most folks in Orange County had never been to a hockey game. Then the Ducks flew into town and the demand for ice exceeded the availability in Orange County. To increase practice ice, the Irvine Ice Foundation recently opened a new four-sheet community facility that features one Olympic rink and three NHL regulation rinks, including the arena that seats 2,500. Great Park Ice also boasts a 20,000 square-foot practice facility for the Ducks, complete with a players’ lounge that features a full-sized kitchen, a video room with theater-style seating, a spacious locker room, two separate gyms.

The Leighton Solution.

Leighton provided a geotechnical exploration and report, and observation and testing during grading. Our engineers and geologists were made available to the project team as the design evolved, addressing changes in soil conditions, and testing and approving import fill.

The site had previously been used for agricultural and military buildings, so the clayey content required overexcavation to address expansive potential.
