Fire Station #61

The Project.

The City of Buena Park determined that the 50-year-old station had significant repair and structural issues and that building a new station was their best alternative.  Located adjacent to Knotts Berry Farm, the new 18,000-square-foot station houses 36 fire personnel with dorms, administration offices, and upgraded amenities. The station remained in full service in a temporary station during construction of the new station.

Project Fact:

Plans for a new station were already underway when a fire destroyed the existing station.

The Leighton Solution.

Leighton completed a geotechnical exploration to provide subsurface data to develop foundation design.  Liquefaction analysis of the soil profiles was conducted using CPT data and a site-specific peak horizontal ground acceleration. We determined that the potentially liquefiable soils are relatively thin and overlain by relatively thick non-liquefiable material, so surface manifestation of liquefaction in the form of sand boils and ground fissures is expected to be low.  The new fire station was designed to be supported on a shallow, mat foundation system.

During construction, Leighton provided geotechnical observation and testing of building pad preparation, site grading, trench backfill, and placement of aggregate base and asphalt concrete. Leighton also provided special inspection and testing of concrete, high strength bolts, fireproofing and welding.
