The Project.
The new 50,000 square foot two-story Math and Science Building at the front of the Colton High School campus provides 12 science classrooms and six dedicated wet labs and 12 math classrooms. Replacing portable classrooms and an outdated science building this is an aesthetic upgrade and source of pride to the school. For student safety, a pedestrian bridge provides access over Rancho Avenue to the school’s stadium. ADA upgrades to the bridge included an elevator tower, and accessible ramp.

The Leighton Solution.
Leighton performed materials testing and inspection services during construction, and grading and postgrading earthwork activities. This included laboratory testing of representative soil samples to determine maximum dry density and optimum moisture content, sand equivalent, and sieve analysis of representative soil, bedding, and aggregate base samples, and the preparation of a DSA 293 form for the project.
Materials inspection and testing included concrete and reinforcing steel used in concrete and inspection of concrete batch plant operations; Portland concrete cement (PCC) cylinders; structural masonry; compression testing of composite masonry prisms, mortar cylinders and grout prism test specimens; welding using gamma ray, sonic or other aids for visual inspection deemed necessary; inspection of welding procedures and welds for conformance to approved plans, specifications, and building codes; and special inspection of powder driven concrete anchors, expansion anchors, and adhesive anchors.
