South Los Angeles Wetlands Park

The Project.

The South Los Angeles Wetlands Park assists the City in meeting TMDL requirements set by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board by increasing beneficial and recreational uses of receiving water bodies such as the Los Angeles River and coastal areas. Further, the wetlands help minimize the introduction of pollutants, including bacteria; oil, grease, and gasoline; suspended sediments; and heavy metals, all of which are components of urban runoff that ultimately are washed into receiving waters. Bacteria levels are reduced in the surf zone to meet new requirements of the stormwater NPDES permit.

Project Fact:

The transformation of a former maintenance yard into a nature park is beneficial to the surrounding community by providing much-needed open green space – as well as to the environment by handling polluted stormwater runoff.

The Leighton Solution.

During redevelopment of the site, Leighton was contracted to develop a sampling plan to fill data gaps that remained from previous investigations. Based on this supplemental site assessment, Leighton recommended that further investigation would be needed to address volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds found in soil samples collected.

To facilitate construction of the park, Leighton conducted soil inspection, waste characterization, and disposal during the demolition of structures. This included sampling, analyzing, and disposing of over 380 tons of soil, as well as the liquid contents of clarifiers; providing air monitoring support during remedial excavation activities; and collecting confirmation samples from excavations.
