Infrastructure Upgrades

The Project.

Driving on the freeway, we get a glimpse at some buildings and training exercises along the ocean, much of Camp Pendleton’s operations are behind the coastal hills out of view from motorists. Leighton has been fortunate to provide services for more than 25 projects on the base including electrical upgrades, water distribution, fences, roads, and housing.

Client:

Camp Pendleton

Location:

San Diego County, CA

Services:

  • Environmental
  • Geotechnical

Project Fact:

With a daytime population hovering around 100,000, maintaining the infrastructure is an undertaking larger than most California cities.

The Leighton Solution.

For a water distribution system upgrade that involved 3,000 feet of 14- to 18-inch water line and a below-grade vault, Leighton was contracted to perform a geotechnical investigation. With the base on both sides of I-5, a section had to be bored and jacked below I-5, requiring borings in the median.

To complete drilling for a geotechnical investigation for a $30.8 million electrical upgrade, we conducted necessary special coordination with MCB field operations due to live fire exercises.

Leighton provided geotechnical observation during grading of 65 building, and concrete testing of the mock Afghanistan village. What looks like a city from around the world is actually the Infantry Immersion Trainer (IIT). This 32,000-square-foot facility uses virtual reality, actual physical structures, and live role players to re-create foreign urban scenes and provide realistic training that prepares Marines and Sailors for deployment to any potential battlefield.
